DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 22 at 7PM\nClick Here to Register. \nCommon Loons and Snowy Owls by Dan Oh\, close friend of Lauri and Ralph Shaffer\, excellent photographer\, and New England birder\, will use PowerPoint\, still photography\, and video to discuss two of his favorite subjects: the Snowy Owl and the Common Loon\, including their life cycles\,how to find them\, and tips for photographing them. Dan is a retired Chemical Engineer and former Director of Operations at Key Polymer. Dan was recently awarded two of the top ten awards in the 2025 National Audubon Photography Contest for his Snowy Owl and Common Loon video submissions. This is a Zoom meeting but we will also project the Zoom meeting on a large screen at our usual meeting place\, 589 Fairground Road\, Lewisburg\, for those who would prefer to attend in that way.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 18\, 2026 7 PM – 9 PM \n“Why Counting Birds Matters: Updates on the Pennsylvania Bird Atlas and Tips for Participating” Amber Wiewel is the coordinator of the 3rd Pennsylvania Bird Atlas\, which will provide a snapshot of the population status and distribution of birds in the Commonwealth. No other bird surveys are as comprehensive\, and for that reason\, the results are critical to the establishment of conservation priorities for Pennsylvania birds. Amber\nearned her master’s in ecology and evolutionary biology in 2011 from Iowa State University\, having studied the breeding-season ecology of the Puerto Rican Bullfinch. In Puerto Rico\, she also led field crews surveying birds for a large collaborative research project. Her bachelor’s degree research examined winter ecology of the Black-and-white Warbler in Puerto Rico. Nesting there since 2017\, they have contributed to the endangered Great Lakes population in a meaningful way and afforded us the opportunity to learn more about these charismatic shorebirds. They have also provided moments of deep sadness as well as sublime joy. Mary Birdsong\, co-founder and Lead Shorebird Monitor for Erie Bird Observatory\, will provide an overview of Erie Bird Observatory programs as well as information about the Great Lakes population of Piping Plovers\, including highlights from the last nine years of monitoring. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 17 at 7PM\, East Buffalo Township Building\, 589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA.\n\n\nDr. Warren “Abe” Abrahamson\nProfessor of Biology Emeritus\, Bucknell University. Abe\, a teacher and researcher at Bucknell University from 1973 until 2012 and a Research Associate of Archbold Biological Station https://www.archbold-station.org/ from 1976 to the present\, held Bucknell University’s endowed David Burpee Chair in Plant Genetics from 1983 until his retirement in 2012. Abe’s teaching was recognized with two awards from Bucknell University\, the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1975 & The Class of 1956 Lectureship in 1982\, and he was nominated for Baylor University’s Robert Foster Cherry Award in 2007. His commitment to conservation was recognized in 1984 by National Audubon Society’s William Dutcher Award for Outstanding Service to the Audubon Cause at the Regional Level (Mid-Atlantic Region)\, in 2002 by a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Merrill Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy\, and in 2014 by the Science and Conservation Awareness Award from Archbold Biological Station. \n\nAbe enjoys travelling and has participated in expeditions to the Andes Mountains\, Amazon basin\, as well as 3 trips to Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands (1979\, 1990\, 2008)\, Peru (including Machu Picchu)\, and Brazil. He has rafted or canoed white-water rivers (Tatshenshini\, Alsek\, Nahanni\, and Wind Rivers) \n\nJoin us as ecologist and naturalist Warren Abrahamson shares his adventures on four of Canada’s iconic northwestern wilderness rivers — the Nahanni\, Tatshenshini\, Alsek\, & Wind. \n\nThe Nahanni River flows through Canada’s deepest river canyons\, past hot springs and geological features so unique that the Nahanni River was among the first World Heritage Sites to be declared by the United Nations in 1978. \n\nPart of the world’s largest bio-preserve\, the Tatshenshini River flows through the Yukon\, British Columbia\, Alaska\, Glacier Bay National Park\, Alsek/Tatshenshini Provincial Park\, out to the Gulf of Alaska. It’s home to grizzlies\, bald eagles\, moose\, wolves and more. \n\nThe Alsek River has its origins only a short distance from the Tatshenshini but the difference between the two rivers is dramatic. Starting in the rain shadow of some of North America’s tallest peaks\, the Alsek River flows through two glacial lakes. Known for grizzly bears\, wildflowers\, and famed Turnback Canyon. The latter requires a portage assisted by helicopter. \n\nThe Wind River is an arctic mountain river and is renowned for its tremendous hiking and whitewater. Paralleling the border of the Yukon and Northwest Territories and ending above the Arctic Circle\, the Wind is a crystal-clear remote northern river with superb mountain hiking.

Enjoy the photos of birds from the diminutiveand iridescent Variable Sunbird to the Common Ostrich. Learn about the Great Migration and see images of the many mammals – including herds of Burchell’s Zebras\, a female Cheetah and her young cubs\, Vervet Monkeys\, and Epauletted Fruit Bats hanging in trees – and colorful lizards and butterflies that are being protected in these important ecological areas in northern Tanzania.\n\nLynette Mansfield\n\nLynette is retired kindergarten teacher and Vice President of South Mountain Audubon in Gettysburg.  She is an amateur photographer who enjoys traveling to new and exotic locations.  She says that sharing her photos is a fun way to educate others about places and nature that they might never see.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 19 at 7:30pm. in the Kelly Township Supervisors’ Building (551 Zeigler RD/Lewisburg\, PA) \nRobyn Graboski is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and the founder of Centre Wildlife Care. She received her BS in Animal BioScience from Penn State University and has been professionally rehabilitating wildlife since 1988. Robyn\, the executive director of CWC\, currently oversees the care of over 1500 compromised wild animals per year with a staff of over 50 volunteers and donations. CWC cares for all species of native wildlife including mammals\, birds\, reptiles and amphibians in addition to providing educational outreach. Robyn holds permits from the PA Game Commission\, the Fish and Boat Commission\, the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and the USDA to rehabilitate wildlife and use live animals in educational outreach. In addition to doing outreach programs in person\, Robyn has a TV segment called “Wildlife Wednesday” where she talks about animals in her care and natural history. \n  \n  \n

They are highly adapted to a nocturnal lifestyle\, a time when humans seek warmth\, shelter and light. Pennsylvania’s owls range in size from large to small filling a variety of niches in the environment. We’ll examine folklore\, adaptations and natural history of owls that reside in our state both year round and those that only visit briefly.\nJon Beam was a naturalist for PPL at Montour Preserve for 24 years\, offering educational programs to schools\, scouts\, special interest groups and the general public. He is currently Assistant Director for Montour Area Recreation Commission (MARC) and still offering educational programs about the natural world.

SUMMARY:The State of Pennsylvania's Birds with Doug Gross
DESCRIPTION:Doug will review the recent successes in bird conservation with species such as the Bald Eagle\, Osprey\, and Peregrine Falcon\, and our current challenges with endangered and species of greatest conservation need. Some of these include Yellow-bellied Flycatcher\, Golden-winged\, Cerulean\, and Blackpoll warblers\, Wood thrush and Swainson’s Thrush.\nRecently retired as a Wildlife Biologist and Ornithologist from the Pennsylvania Game Commission\, Doug has been involved with the monitoring and management of these species of concern\, especially in our northern conifer forests. He is currently working on a study of the bird community of Rickett’s Glen State Park with the intent of producing an annotated bird checklist and site guide. He and his wife live in rural Columbia County and enjoy gardening\, nature study and traveling.
