SUMMARY:Celebrity Shorebirds at Presque Isle by Mary Birdsong - 11/19/2025 Monthly Educational Meeting (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Nov 19\, 2025 – 7:00 PM \nCelebrity Shorebirds: Piping Plovers and Common Terns at Presque Isle after a 60-year absence\, Piping Plovers are now once again calling Gull Point at Presque Isle State Park their summer home. Nesting there since 2017\, they have contributed to the endangered Great Lakes population in a meaningful way and afforded us the opportunity to learn more about these charismatic shorebirds. They have also provided moments of deep sadness as well as sublime joy. Mary Birdsong\, co-founder and Lead Shorebird Monitor for Erie Bird Observatory\, will provide an overview of Erie Bird Observatory programs as well as information about the Great Lakes population of Piping Plovers\, including highlights from the last nine years of monitoring. She will also talk about Common Terns\, who have also attempted to nest at Gull point and were finally successful. \n  \nClick here for the recording of this presentation. \nRegister now for the Zoom Link.

SUMMARY:February Educational Meeting 2/18/26 "Native Habitat for Birds on Your Property"
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 18 7-9PM \nWild birds have been experiencing population declines for decades. One of the greatest factors in this decline is habitat loss. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever Senior Farm Bill Biologist\, Court Harding\, also a member of the Board for the Seven Mountains Audubon\, will present on how you can help birds in your backyard or across your property by improving wildlife habitat. Court will present on how Pheasants Forever helps to improve wildlife habitat for private landowners\, what habitat improvements look like\, native plants that are beneficial to birds\, and noxious weed management. The presentation includes plenty of bird photos Court has taken across Pennsylvania. \n589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA 17837-8832\, United States

SUMMARY:March Educ Mtg: "Why Counting Birds Matters..." Amber Wiewel\, Coordinator of 3rd PA Bird Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 18\, 2026 7 PM – 9 PM \n“Why Counting Birds Matters: Updates on the Pennsylvania Bird Atlas and Tips for Participating” Amber Wiewel is the coordinator of the 3rd Pennsylvania Bird Atlas\, which will provide a snapshot of the population status and distribution of birds in the Commonwealth. No other bird surveys are as comprehensive\, and for that reason\, the results are critical to the establishment of conservation priorities for Pennsylvania birds. Amber\nearned her master’s in ecology and evolutionary biology in 2011 from Iowa State University\, having studied the breeding-season ecology of the Puerto Rican Bullfinch. In Puerto Rico\, she also led field crews surveying birds for a large collaborative research project. Her bachelor’s degree research examined winter ecology of the Black-and-white Warbler in Puerto Rico. In addition to her professional pursuits\, Amber also participates in the USGS annual breeding bird surveys and volunteers as a Penn State MasterGardener\, helping landowners with garden plans. \n589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA 17837-8832\, United States

SUMMARY:"A Geo Big Year..." Prof. Alan MacEachren. Register for Zoom Link below.
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 20\, 2026 at 7 PM \nClick here to Register for the Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/…/register/ZJJRiilQTfmsx_S-Xa2L1A” A Geo Big Year: Pandemic Retirement Is For The Birds” by Professor Alan MacEachren\, a Penn State University geographer\, was in the process of retiring in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic when he embarked on a year-long birding adventure\, with a goal of identifying 67 species in each of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania. Hewrote a book about this quest. This is a Zoom meeting but we will also project the Zoom meeting on a large screen at our usual meeting place\, 589 Fairground Road\, Lewisburg\, for those who would prefer to attend in that way.\n\n(Amazon Book Synopsis) The book chronicles the birding experiences and birds seen as well as the travel and retirement challenges. The story\, told chronologically\, is focused on the search for birds. It includes an account of what birds were seen (or not seen) in specific counties and specific sites within those counties. It also recounts the quest itself as it unfolded. Written by a Geographer\, places visited are also highlighted. The narrative conveys the adventure of experiencing the mix of both popular and seldom visited places. These places were mostly rural and included state and county parks\, gamelands\, wildlife refuges\, trails\, and forests across the state together with less attractive places (for humans) that still attract birds (such as cemeteries\, retention ponds\, and county dumps). The book includes 471 black and white figures\, most of which are photo composites of birds seen and/or of the places visited. In total\, the 471 figures consist of more than 600 photos of birds plus more than 300 other images (that include landscape scenes\, signage\, non-bird creatures seen\, maps\, and graphs). The book is intended for a wide audience. Aspects of the account should resonate with readers who: are or want to be birders; are retired or contemplating retirement; like to travel\, particularly on back roads and to natural places that are off the beaten track; are academics thinking about work life balance; have tried (or thought about trying) camping after not doing any for a long time; have a bucket list to pursue; have experienced life changes or expect to have some soon; or have ever contemplated pursuing a birding big year or any other kind of year-long quest.
