SUMMARY:Northwest Winds: Winds of Change\, Winds of Hope?
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 5\, 2025 at 12 PM\n\nJoin us for our February Lunch & Learn presentation with Clay Sutton. Clay was the Plenary speaker for our 50th anniversary conference in November in Duluth\, MN and we’d like to share his fabulous presentation with the wider hawk-watching community!\nClay Sutton will reflect upon his own 50 years of watching hawks\, primarily at Cape May\, New Jersey\, but also at many of the key raptor watches throughout North America and beyond. He relates “What a long\, strange trip it has been\,” and how in his wildest dreams he never expected to see\, in his lifetime\, the changes that he has witnessed. Many changes have been good and for the better\, and some not so much. We have benefited greatly from emerging resources\, and have been the benefactors of amazing advances in optics\, information\, and technology. We have all seen changes in the composition of raptor flights\, and changes in the very expectations of what we may see. We have experienced significant shifts in the migration phenology and winter ranges of hawks. But what hasn’t changed is the energy\, dedication\, and enthusiasm of those who annually staff their posts\, climbing to mountain outcrops\, urban overlooks\, sandy beaches\, and lighthouses at land’s end to monitor and celebrate the annual passage of birds of prey. Clay will conclude that the 21 st Century may have brought great changes\, but that shifting winds will never diminish the need\, or our passion\, for what we do.\nClay Sutton is a life-long resident of Cape May County\, New Jersey\, where he has worked as an environmental planner\, environmental program administrator\, vice-president of an environmental consulting firm specializing in threatened and endangered species. Now “mostly retired\,” he spent the last past two decades as a self-employed environmental consultant\, field biologist\, and naturalist. Clay is a free-lance writer\, lecturer\, tour leader\, and was a long-time instructor for the Institute for Field Ornithology. He first began watching hawks in 1974\, and the science and wonder of bird migration has remained his captivating interest.\nClay is a co-author\, with Pete Dunne and David Sibley\, of the classic Hawks in Flight (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt\, 1988; Second Edition\, 2012)\, a complete and holistic guide to raptor identification. Clay has long been proudly associated with HMA\, and has been a member since 1979.Clay and his wife Pat Sutton co-authored How to Spot Butterflies (1999)\, How to Spot Hawks & Eagles (1996)\, and How to Spot an Owl (1994)\, all published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Their acclaimed book\, Birds and Birding at Cape May (Stackpole Books\, 2006\, 568 pages)\, is the in-depth result of their efforts over many years documenting and protecting the migration and the area that they so love. This landmark book is a complete guide to birds and birding for the Cape May region\, covering what to see\, when\, where\, and how to go\, as well as chronicling the unique and storied ornithological history of the Jersey Cape.\nThis program is FREE and open to all. Registration is required\, please click the link below to register.\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEtd-mgqj4pGdCj7gqvhFwoPz-AFA-Cfwa8#/\nFor those not able to join via Zoom\, we will live stream the program on our HMANA Facebook page as well. Recordings of all programs will be available on our website\, hmana.org\, following the event.\n

SUMMARY:January Presentation: History of Penn State Herbarium
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 15 at 7PM \nPenn State Herbarium Curator Sarah Chamberlain will guide us through the history of the herbarium from its humble beginnings as one of the oldest collections at Penn State to its present position as the third largest herbarium in Pennsylvania. Ms. Chamberlain will discuss why herbarium specimens are important and their current uses for both research and teaching. She will also bring specimens for examination after the presentation. Told with historic photos and sprinkled with humor and interesting stories tying specimens to history\, art\, entomology\, and the “8th Wonder of the World”\, this engaging virtual tour of the Penn State Herbarium will convince you herbarium collections are a lot more than just a bunch of dead plants! \n\nOur meeting place is the East Buffalo Township building\, 589 Fairgrounds Road\, Lewisburg. We will continue to stream presentations on Facebook Live\, but hope to see you in person. Everyone is welcome to this free event and please feel free to bring a friend or two. SUMMARY:Iconic Canadian Wilderness Rivers: Alsek\, Tatshenshini\, Wind\, and Nahanni
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 17 at 7PM\, East Buffalo Township Building\, 589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA.\n\n\nDr. Warren “Abe” Abrahamson\nProfessor of Biology Emeritus\, Bucknell University. Abe\, a teacher and researcher at Bucknell University from 1973 until 2012 and a Research Associate of Archbold Biological Station https://www.archbold-station.org/ from 1976 to the present\, held Bucknell University’s endowed David Burpee Chair in Plant Genetics from 1983 until his retirement in 2012. Abe’s teaching was recognized with two awards from Bucknell University\, the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1975 & The Class of 1956 Lectureship in 1982\, and he was nominated for Baylor University’s Robert Foster Cherry Award in 2007. His commitment to conservation was recognized in 1984 by National Audubon Society’s William Dutcher Award for Outstanding Service to the Audubon Cause at the Regional Level (Mid-Atlantic Region)\, in 2002 by a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Merrill Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy\, and in 2014 by the Science and Conservation Awareness Award from Archbold Biological Station. \n\nAbe enjoys travelling and has participated in expeditions to the Andes Mountains\, Amazon basin\, as well as 3 trips to Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands (1979\, 1990\, 2008)\, Peru (including Machu Picchu)\, and Brazil. He has rafted or canoed white-water rivers (Tatshenshini\, Alsek\, Nahanni\, and Wind Rivers) \n\nJoin us as ecologist and naturalist Warren Abrahamson shares his adventures on four of Canada’s iconic northwestern wilderness rivers — the Nahanni\, Tatshenshini\, Alsek\, & Wind. \n\nThe Nahanni River flows through Canada’s deepest river canyons\, past hot springs and geological features so unique that the Nahanni River was among the first World Heritage Sites to be declared by the United Nations in 1978. \n\nPart of the world’s largest bio-preserve\, the Tatshenshini River flows through the Yukon\, British Columbia\, Alaska\, Glacier Bay National Park\, Alsek/Tatshenshini Provincial Park\, out to the Gulf of Alaska. It’s home to grizzlies\, bald eagles\, moose\, wolves and more. \n\nThe Alsek River has its origins only a short distance from the Tatshenshini but the difference between the two rivers is dramatic. Starting in the rain shadow of some of North America’s tallest peaks\, the Alsek River flows through two glacial lakes. Known for grizzly bears\, wildflowers\, and famed Turnback Canyon. The latter requires a portage assisted by helicopter. \n\nThe Wind River is an arctic mountain river and is renowned for its tremendous hiking and whitewater. Paralleling the border of the Yukon and Northwest Territories and ending above the Arctic Circle\, the Wind is a crystal-clear remote northern river with superb mountain hiking.

SUMMARY:A Journey to the Galapagos Islands\, Educational Meeting\, presented by Jill Largent
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 20\, 2024 7-9 PM\n\n\n“The Galápagos Islands is a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. It’s considered one of the world’s foremost destinations for wildlife-viewing. A province of Ecuador\, it lies about 1\,000km off its coast. Its isolated terrain shelters a diversity of plant and animal species\, many found nowhere else. Charles Darwin visited in 1835\, and his observation of Galápagos’ species later inspired his theory of evolution.” ― Google\nJill Largent graduated in 1974 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College with BS in Biomedicine and MD. She trained at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology. Joined faculty AMC and became Associate Professor in 1979. Joined Geisinger Medical Center in 1990. Retired 2004. Has had lifelong interest in nature. Was active in Seven Mountains Audubon for several years and now mostly hides at home. She is married to longtime Seven Mountains Audubon member John McCann.\n589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA 17837-8832

SUMMARY:March Educational Meeting (Zoom) - Palmyra Atoll by Matt Miller
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 21st at 7 p.m.\n\nPalmyra Atoll: A Paradise in the Pacific. The Palmyra Atoll is a cluster of islands 1\,000 miles south of Hawaii\, but unlike many Pacific islands\, it historically has never had human inhabitants. The site of a small naval base during WWII\, today it is jointly managed by The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Take a virtual journey to Palmyra with Matt Miller\, editor of The Nature Conservancy’s Cool Green Science\, who visited the atoll as part of a fish research project in 2021. Palmyra is an atoll with immense seabird nesting colonies\, healthy coral reefs\, 12 land crab species including the gigantic coconut crab\, sea turtles\, sharks\, manta rays and more. This diversity was threatened by the presence of invasive rats\, eradicated in 2015. Matt will share stories of conservation and hope from Palmyra\, today one of the most pristine island ecosystems anywhere in the world.\n\n\nThe zoom link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83765201186…\nThe meeting ID is: 837 6520 1186\nThe meeting PW is: 422079\n\n
