SUMMARY:Iconic Canadian Wilderness Rivers: Alsek\, Tatshenshini\, Wind\, and Nahanni
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 17 at 7PM\, East Buffalo Township Building\, 589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA.\n\n\nDr. Warren “Abe” Abrahamson\nProfessor of Biology Emeritus\, Bucknell University. Abe\, a teacher and researcher at Bucknell University from 1973 until 2012 and a Research Associate of Archbold Biological Station https://www.archbold-station.org/ from 1976 to the present\, held Bucknell University’s endowed David Burpee Chair in Plant Genetics from 1983 until his retirement in 2012. Abe’s teaching was recognized with two awards from Bucknell University\, the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1975 & The Class of 1956 Lectureship in 1982\, and he was nominated for Baylor University’s Robert Foster Cherry Award in 2007. His commitment to conservation was recognized in 1984 by National Audubon Society’s William Dutcher Award for Outstanding Service to the Audubon Cause at the Regional Level (Mid-Atlantic Region)\, in 2002 by a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Merrill Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy\, and in 2014 by the Science and Conservation Awareness Award from Archbold Biological Station. \n\nAbe enjoys travelling and has participated in expeditions to the Andes Mountains\, Amazon basin\, as well as 3 trips to Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands (1979\, 1990\, 2008)\, Peru (including Machu Picchu)\, and Brazil. He has rafted or canoed white-water rivers (Tatshenshini\, Alsek\, Nahanni\, and Wind Rivers) \n\nJoin us as ecologist and naturalist Warren Abrahamson shares his adventures on four of Canada’s iconic northwestern wilderness rivers — the Nahanni\, Tatshenshini\, Alsek\, & Wind. \n\nThe Nahanni River flows through Canada’s deepest river canyons\, past hot springs and geological features so unique that the Nahanni River was among the first World Heritage Sites to be declared by the United Nations in 1978. \n\nPart of the world’s largest bio-preserve\, the Tatshenshini River flows through the Yukon\, British Columbia\, Alaska\, Glacier Bay National Park\, Alsek/Tatshenshini Provincial Park\, out to the Gulf of Alaska. It’s home to grizzlies\, bald eagles\, moose\, wolves and more. \n\nThe Alsek River has its origins only a short distance from the Tatshenshini but the difference between the two rivers is dramatic. Starting in the rain shadow of some of North America’s tallest peaks\, the Alsek River flows through two glacial lakes. Known for grizzly bears\, wildflowers\, and famed Turnback Canyon. The latter requires a portage assisted by helicopter. \n\nThe Wind River is an arctic mountain river and is renowned for its tremendous hiking and whitewater. Paralleling the border of the Yukon and Northwest Territories and ending above the Arctic Circle\, the Wind is a crystal-clear remote northern river with superb mountain hiking.

SUMMARY:A Journey to the Galapagos Islands\, Educational Meeting\, presented by Jill Largent
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 20\, 2024 7-9 PM\n\n\n“The Galápagos Islands is a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. It’s considered one of the world’s foremost destinations for wildlife-viewing. A province of Ecuador\, it lies about 1\,000km off its coast. Its isolated terrain shelters a diversity of plant and animal species\, many found nowhere else. Charles Darwin visited in 1835\, and his observation of Galápagos’ species later inspired his theory of evolution.” ― Google\nJill Largent graduated in 1974 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College with BS in Biomedicine and MD. She trained at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology. Joined faculty AMC and became Associate Professor in 1979. Joined Geisinger Medical Center in 1990. Retired 2004. Has had lifelong interest in nature. Was active in Seven Mountains Audubon for several years and now mostly hides at home. She is married to longtime Seven Mountains Audubon member John McCann.\n589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA 17837-8832

SUMMARY:March Educational Meeting (Zoom) - Palmyra Atoll by Matt Miller
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 21st at 7 p.m.\n\nPalmyra Atoll: A Paradise in the Pacific. The Palmyra Atoll is a cluster of islands 1\,000 miles south of Hawaii\, but unlike many Pacific islands\, it historically has never had human inhabitants. The site of a small naval base during WWII\, today it is jointly managed by The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Take a virtual journey to Palmyra with Matt Miller\, editor of The Nature Conservancy’s Cool Green Science\, who visited the atoll as part of a fish research project in 2021. Palmyra is an atoll with immense seabird nesting colonies\, healthy coral reefs\, 12 land crab species including the gigantic coconut crab\, sea turtles\, sharks\, manta rays and more. This diversity was threatened by the presence of invasive rats\, eradicated in 2015. Matt will share stories of conservation and hope from Palmyra\, today one of the most pristine island ecosystems anywhere in the world.\n\n\nThe zoom link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83765201186…\nThe meeting ID is: 837 6520 1186\nThe meeting PW is: 422079\n\n

The meeting begins at 7:00 pm\, but the doors will be open earlier.\nAs is our tradition\, we will share all sorts of nature-related items – photographs\, books\, poems\, quotes\, crafts or whatever else you can imagine! We hope you will bring something to share with our group. If you prefer not to\, still come and enjoy the camaraderie of the season. As a special treat Allen and Joanne Schweinsberg will be with us to share their memories of the history of our chapter. They were involved almost from the start having taken over the Christmas Bird count in 1974! All are welcome and encouraged to share their own memories and highlights from their connection to Seven Mountain’s first half-century.\nAs part of our refreshments we will have a special sheet cake decorated with the Seven Mountain’s logo and some bird photos. We will have other refreshments too so plan to stay afterward and visit awhile.\nJoin us at our New meeting location\, the East Buffalo Township building\, 589 Fairground Road\, Lewisburg. Everyone is welcome to this free event and please feel free to come and bring a friend or two.\nHappy Holidays – see you on the 20th!\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 18\, 2023 at 7 PM\nEast Buffalo Township Municipal Building\, 589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA 17837\n\n\nI think that the title of this talk is a question that the speaker has asked himself. For many years\, he was Director of the Hematology Laboratory (Peripheral blood\, bone marrow and coagulation).\nHe has been a valued mentor\, teacher and consultant to many in the laboratory and on the physician staff at Geisinger. He is a member of the Columbia-Montour Photography Club. He and his wife Sue\, enjoy birding\, photography\, kayaking and travel.\nThis program will be in person and it will also be live-streamed on Seven Mountains Facebook.\n\n

SUMMARY:Union County Birding Spotlight: Dale's Ridge Trail
DESCRIPTION:Sunday October 15\, 2023\, 9:00 am to about 11:00 am\, depending on birdiness\nDale’s Ridge Trail\nTrip Co-Leaders: Deepak Iyer and Joe Gyekis\n\nMeet at the main parking lot at Dale’s Ridge beside the bridge and walk along Buffalo Creek and up the side of the bluff\, looking for fall migrants as we always do in October! Walking speed will be slow\, birder speed\, but one part is fairly steep\, it’s OK if people just join for the easy part along the creek\, and if birding is busy\, we might not even scale the slope at all. However\, if we’re ambitious and conditions encourage it\, the hawkwatching can be good from the powerline cut as the day warms.\nhttps://linnconservancy.org/trails/dales-ridge-trail/\n
