SUMMARY:The Insect Apocalypse: What’s Happening\, Why it Matters\, and What to Do
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 16th at 7PM (Virtual Presentation)\n“The Insect Apocalypse: What’s Happening\, Why it Matters\, and What to Do” by Maria Cramer who is a PhD student in Entomology at the University of Maryland.\n“Insect abundances have been declining in many parts of the world. Many of us can even recognize the “windshield effect”– that in recent years far fewer insects splatter on our windshields during the summer. But even though we know for sure that insects are declining\, there are still many unanswered questions: Are all types of insects declining? What’s causing it? How does it impact us? This talk will journey through causes of insect declines\, the importance of insects for ecosystem functions (not just providing bird food!)\, and will cover what we can all do to help.\nTo participate you must email Kay Cramer at falconrider1@ymail.com to obtain Zoom link\n

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count (Rescheduled December 29)
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Lewisburg Christmas Bird Count has now been rescheduled to Tuesday December 29 because of weather and will not take place this Saturday\, December 19! While Saturday’s weather will be better\, it is likely roads in much of the count area will still be snow covered and impassible\, limiting where we could safely bird. \nIn view of the Covid-19 pandemic\, National Audubon has issued guidelines for count areas that choose to hold a Christmas Bird Count. We will conduct the count with the following restrictions and changes: \n1. No in-person compilation gatherings. You must submit your results by email.\n2. Carpooling can only occur for members of the same household\n3. Social distancing and/or masking is required at all times\n4. There will be no assigned territories. People are free to count birds at any time or place within the count circle on Saturday\, December 19 \nAnyone is welcome to participate. If interested in participating\, please send an email to info@sevenmountainsaudubon.org . \nFor reference\, the official count circle can be found here https://www.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=ac275eeb01434cedb1c5dcd0fd3fc7b4

SUMMARY:Helping Woodcock (Cancelled!)
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled! The monthly program scheduled for Wednesday\, March 18\, 2020 at 7:30 PM – 9 PM has now been cancelled. \nEspecially given that the usual attendance demographic consists of many older individuals at higher risk\, we have decided to cancel the event out of abundance of caution. While we do not yet have confirmed cases of coronavirus in the local area\, local transmission precedes confirmed cases because of a lag. This cancellation is in line with other local organizations canceling similar non-essential social gatherings. Thank you for your understanding.

SUMMARY:Owls of Pennsylvania\, Jon Beam
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 16\, 2019 at 7:30 PM at the Kelly Township Supervisors’ Building (551 Zeigler RD/Lewisburg\, PA) \nOwls have been viewed as creatures of mystery and fear in various cultures through the ages. They are highly adapted to a nocturnal lifestyle\, a time when humans seek warmth\, shelter and light. Pennsylvania’s owls range in size from large to small filling a variety of niches in the environment. We’ll examine folklore\, adaptations and natural history of owls that reside in our state both year round and those that only visit briefly.\nJon Beam was a naturalist for PPL at Montour Preserve for 24 years\, offering educational programs to schools\, scouts\, special interest groups and the general public. He is currently Assistant Director for Montour Area Recreation Commission (MARC) and still offering educational programs about the natural world.
