SUMMARY:A Journey to the Galapagos Islands\, Educational Meeting\, presented by Jill Largent
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 20\, 2024 7-9 PM\n\n\n“The Galápagos Islands is a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. It’s considered one of the world’s foremost destinations for wildlife-viewing. A province of Ecuador\, it lies about 1\,000km off its coast. Its isolated terrain shelters a diversity of plant and animal species\, many found nowhere else. Charles Darwin visited in 1835\, and his observation of Galápagos’ species later inspired his theory of evolution.” ― Google\nJill Largent graduated in 1974 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College with BS in Biomedicine and MD. She trained at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology. Joined faculty AMC and became Associate Professor in 1979. Joined Geisinger Medical Center in 1990. Retired 2004. Has had lifelong interest in nature. Was active in Seven Mountains Audubon for several years and now mostly hides at home. She is married to longtime Seven Mountains Audubon member John McCann.\n589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA 17837-8832

SUMMARY:March Educational Meeting (Zoom) - Palmyra Atoll by Matt Miller
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 21st at 7 p.m.\n\nPalmyra Atoll: A Paradise in the Pacific. The Palmyra Atoll is a cluster of islands 1\,000 miles south of Hawaii\, but unlike many Pacific islands\, it historically has never had human inhabitants. The site of a small naval base during WWII\, today it is jointly managed by The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Take a virtual journey to Palmyra with Matt Miller\, editor of The Nature Conservancy’s Cool Green Science\, who visited the atoll as part of a fish research project in 2021. Palmyra is an atoll with immense seabird nesting colonies\, healthy coral reefs\, 12 land crab species including the gigantic coconut crab\, sea turtles\, sharks\, manta rays and more. This diversity was threatened by the presence of invasive rats\, eradicated in 2015. Matt will share stories of conservation and hope from Palmyra\, today one of the most pristine island ecosystems anywhere in the world.\n\n\nThe zoom link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83765201186…\nThe meeting ID is: 837 6520 1186\nThe meeting PW is: 422079\n\n

The meeting begins at 7:00 pm\, but the doors will be open earlier.\nAs is our tradition\, we will share all sorts of nature-related items – photographs\, books\, poems\, quotes\, crafts or whatever else you can imagine! As a special treat Allen and Joanne Schweinsberg will be with us to share their memories of the history of our chapter. They were involved almost from the start having taken over the Christmas Bird count in 1974! All are welcome and encouraged to share their own memories and highlights from their connection to Seven Mountain’s first half-century.\nAs part of our refreshments we will have a special sheet cake decorated with the Seven Mountain’s logo and some bird photos. We will have other refreshments too so plan to stay afterward and visit awhile.\nJoin us at our New meeting location\, the East Buffalo Township building\, 589 Fairground Road\, Lewisburg. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 18\, 2023 at 7 PM\nEast Buffalo Township Municipal Building\, 589 Fairground Rd\, Lewisburg\, PA 17837\n\n\nI think that the title of this talk is a question that the speaker has asked himself. DESCRIPTION:Sunday October 15\, 2023\, 9:00 am to about 11:00 am\, depending on birdiness\nDale’s Ridge Trail\nTrip Co-Leaders: Deepak Iyer and Joe Gyekis\n\nMeet at the main parking lot at Dale’s Ridge beside the bridge and walk along Buffalo Creek and up the side of the bluff\, looking for fall migrants as we always do in October! Walking speed will be slow\, birder speed\, but one part is fairly steep\, it’s OK if people just join for the easy part along the creek\, and if birding is busy\, we might not even scale the slope at all. However\, if we’re ambitious and conditions encourage it\, the hawkwatching can be good from the powerline cut as the day warms.\nhttps://linnconservancy.org/trails/dales-ridge-trail/\n

SUMMARY:April Saturday Bird Walk (Allenwood Game Lands)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 15\, 2023: Meet at 8AM \nThis is the rescheduled April monthly Saturday bird walk\, originally scheduled for Saturday\, April 1. We decided to reschedule the bird walk because the forecast of rain will likely leave the trails flooded. The walk will be led by Michael McGuire. \nThis is a good location for migrating water\, wading\, and shore birds with several low lying ponds and wetland areas. The ponds can also be good places to see osprey and bald eagles. The osprey in the picture is from April 2019. By mid-April\, we should also start to see some migrating warblers. \nTrails are low lying and can often be wet. Water proof boots are suggested. Also expect ticks and dress and prepare accordingly. \nPlease follow directions below carefully. This location can be hard to find. \nGo west on Rt 44 off of Rt 15 at Allenwood about 4.3 miles. Turn north (right) on Mill Rd. Follow Mill Rd north until 1.4 miles until it ends at Alvira Rd. Turn east (right) on Alvira Rd and drive .55 miles until reaching the parking lot on the north (left) side of the road where we will begin our bird walk. Note that Alvira Rd is now gated off after (east of) this parking lot. This means it is no longer possible to drive to this location from the other direction. These are the GPS coordinates of the parking lot/meeting location 41° 8’10.55″N \, 76°57’33.36″W \n \n \nApril 2019\, photo credit © Michael McGuire
