SUMMARY:April Saturday Bird Walk (Allenwood Game Lands)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 15\, 2023: Meet at 8AM \nThis is the rescheduled April monthly Saturday bird walk\, originally scheduled for Saturday\, April 1. We decided to reschedule the bird walk because the forecast of rain will likely leave the trails flooded. The walk will be led by Michael McGuire. \nThis is a good location for migrating water\, wading\, and shore birds with several low lying ponds and wetland areas. The ponds can also be good places to see osprey and bald eagles. The osprey in the picture is from April 2019. By mid-April\, we should also start to see some migrating warblers. \nTrails are low lying and can often be wet. Water proof boots are suggested. Also expect ticks and dress and prepare accordingly. \nPlease follow directions below carefully. This location can be hard to find. \nGo west on Rt 44 off of Rt 15 at Allenwood about 4.3 miles. Turn north (right) on Mill Rd. Follow Mill Rd north until 1.4 miles until it ends at Alvira Rd. Turn east (right) on Alvira Rd and drive .55 miles until reaching the parking lot on the north (left) side of the road where we will begin our bird walk. Note that Alvira Rd is now gated off after (east of) this parking lot. This means it is no longer possible to drive to this location from the other direction. Enjoy the photos of birds from the diminutiveand iridescent Variable Sunbird to the Common Ostrich. Learn about the Great Migration and see images of the many mammals – including herds of Burchell’s Zebras\, a female Cheetah and her young cubs\, Vervet Monkeys\, and Epauletted Fruit Bats hanging in trees – and colorful lizards and butterflies that are being protected in these important ecological areas in northern Tanzania.\n\nLynette Mansfield\n\nLynette is retired kindergarten teacher and Vice President of South Mountain Audubon in Gettysburg.  She is an amateur photographer who enjoys traveling to new and exotic locations.  She says that sharing her photos is a fun way to educate others about places and nature that they might never see.

DESCRIPTION:December 18\, 2021 \nThe Lewisburg Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday\, December 18\, 2021.\nPlease let me know if you will\, might\, or will not be able to participate.\nThis year National Audubon asked us not to schedule the count until November 15 so that more local information on Covid might be available. I’m not sure that helped\, since nobody knows yet what conditions will be like a month from now.\nAlso\, like last year\, National Audubon requests that only related family members accompany each other during the count. This is certainly an abundance of caution\, and I leave it to you individually to determine how appropriate this advice is to you.\nSpread the word. Once I have a reasonable tally of those who expect to participate I will create and distribute maps of “territories” for the count day.\nOne thing we all can do in Covid times is get outdoors!\nAllen
